TOPIC: Mercury Detection in Colorado & Remediation if Found in Gas Streams

DESCRIPTION: Decisions related to process safety, environmental responsibility, as well as occupational safety are guided by data. The more robust these data, and the more confidence you have in these data, the better. There are several quality assurance protocols that must be followed to ensure accurate, precise and representative data. PMG assures accurate characterization and quantitation of mercury in natural gas using sorbent trap sampling techniques employing sampling and analysis equipment specifically designed for the natural gas industry.

This presentation will include a case study where our sampling team found elevated (well above the ALPEMA recommended limit of 0.1ug/Scm) levels of mercury in natural gas across various locations in Colorado. Mercury concentrations at levels above ALPEMA recommended limits can pose a significant risk to NGL plant operations resulting in potential catastrophic brazed aluminum heat exchanger failures, piping and equipment contamination, and potential personnel exposure. An overview of the approach to obtain “legally defensible data” will be covered as well as the steps to take once mercury is found in gas at levels above acceptable limits.
